The woodcock belongs to the scolopax family. It’s large dark eyes are almost at the back of it’s head, which allows it to see behind. It’s bill can reach more than 3 inches long, which is quite a bit longer than it’s head. The average woodcock weighs between 9 and 13 ounces. It’s chestnut feathering makes it surprisingly undetectable on the forest floor, which explains why the woodcock is considered one of the most exciting and challenging feathered game to hunt. The woodcock nests in humid wooded areas and can also be found in open fields, humid groves and bushy marshes.
The Woodcock hunting season is from September 25th to October 30th.
